Maybe you just bought a house or you have been in your home for awhile and you look out the window and wish that you spent more time outside. It doesn't matter if you are looking at small side yard or a spacious open area. You want to be inspired to enjoy the blue skies of Colorado, but the thought of high maintenance Kentucky Bluegrass or irrigation plans makes your head spin. This is where a designer can help!

Design is the best way to ensure quality work, targeted vision and stunning results.

In life, design is essential. Graphic design for websites, logos, and advertisements. Architectural design for homes, office buildings, and apartments. Urban designs for neighborhoods, transit systems, and downtown areas.

Landscaping isn’t an exception. It is important to invest into the exterior areas of your home so you can enjoy your time outdoors and create value if you choose to sell.

Let's take a look at the principles of design:

As Adolf Loos, a European theorist and influencer of modern architecture from the 1900s, said "Architecture arouses sentiments in man. The architect's task, therefore, is to make those sentiments more precise." As designers, it is important to ask questions that focus on how the client spends their free time, what feelings they want experience. The most important rule in landscape design is make sure YOU feel comfortable and at home in YOUR yard.

In addition to searching for the right atmosphere and sentiment, you also want to incorporate your style. Are you looking for a minimalistic, modern design that focuses on sharp edges, a contemporary naturalist look with lots of curves mimicking rivers, or even the well-known French baroque style with mastery over nature with designed gardens to be seen from above. Remember, this is your dream yard!

There are both technical and artistic rules that need to be followed. Technical rules dictate grading, plant selection based on soil and exposure, patio size based on architectural norms and standards etc. Artistic rules determine the style, such as color relationships and natural flow.

Think of a design as a game plan. The timing is up to you. Yes, certain parts of the design must be completed first, but your designer can advise you on how to phase so you can budget appropriately. In general, you should be be prepared to spend 10%+ of your home value on your outdoor spaces. Investing in a design before you build can actually keep this cost down as with a properly detailed plan, landscape contractors will be able to build your project to your specifications. It is important to have a trusted builder, and understand that discoveries can be made during the building process that may require adjustments to the design. A good relationship between client, designer, and builder makes the process that much easier.

Most designs are 2-dimensional, but advances in technology allow us to render a 3D design so you can truly experience the final product before your design is built. It takes more hours and technical know-how to do a 3D design, which is often why they are more expensive. A great design will range from $800 to $5000+, depending on the details and renderings required. However, the value of detailed plan is incalculable to make sure YOU get YOUR dream yard.
