Whether this is your first time looking to hire a landscape designer or your 5th, here is some advice to help make the experience more efficient!

st : This is YOUR home. While you are seeking expert advice, the designer is not there to impose their ideas, but to guide you with expertise to create what you desire and need. While there are some rules that must be followed, if you feel that the artistic vision does not fit with your lifestyle, you get to say so! This is why hiring an independent landscape designer is a good idea, as they are nor biased to sell something for a company, but truly to bring your vision to life.

nd : Be prepared. The more information you can provide, the faster the plan can be completed. A lot of time is spent on researching HOA requirements and finding plot plans through building departments, whom often require the homeowners to contact them. As the homeowner, you can request having a copy of these before you start looking for a designer. Starting a Pinterest board of ideas you have found and liked, helps your designer get to know what calls out to you, and can help determine what style suits your family best. This is also a fun way to get the family involved in the process. But don't worry, the designer should be able to ask questions and make suggestions if you are unable to complete this step.

rd : Questions are wonderful. Your designer should ask you questions about who you are, what you enjoy doing, how many people live in your home, if you enjoy hosting other people and how frequently…. These questions point the designer in the right direction and what artistic rules should be followed. If you meet with multiple designers, you may hear similar questions, which is a good sign. What is most important is that your designer should get to know you! The same is true for you. Ask your designer questions and get to know them as well.

th : Collaboration is key. While designers may have different visions, they need your help by you expressing what you like and don't like. Think of this like teamwork. The more you are able to work together, the better the result will be as both you and the designer will know that the final product truly reflects what works best for you.
